Map Roles in Predecessor
By sacrilege — January 23, 2023
In Predecessor players have the opportunity to choose from a diverse cast of heroes, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles. To be successful in the game, it is important to understand the different map positions that each hero can fill and how they contribute to the team. In this article, we will explore the different placements in Predecessor and the importance of each one in a team composition.
Carry

First, we have the Carry position. Carries are heroes that excel at dealing damage and can scale up and become very powerful as the game goes on, but are very squishy with low health and, particularly early game, rely on a support partner to keep them alive and help set up kills. They share the main lane with support and they are responsible for dealing the majority of the damage in late-game team fights.
Great carries for beginners include Murdock and Sparrow.
Support

Next, we have the Support position. Supports are heroes that excel at providing utility and crowd control for their team, and have a greater impact in Predecessor than in most MOBAs. They share the main lane and are responsible for protecting their carry and setting up kills.
Great supports for beginners include Dekker and Narbash.
Midlane

Changing lane, we have the Midlane position. Mid lane is commonly taken by squishy heroes who deal damage in bursts (as opposed to a carry's steady damage output), and these heroes primarily rely on their abilities for damage, whether mages (ranged burst) or assassins (melee burst).
Great midlaners for beginners include Gideon and Howitzer.
Off-lane

Next up, we have the Off-Lane position. Off-laners are heroes that excel at controlling the lane and pressuring the enemy, with beefy heroes with high health pools or strong self-sustain. These heroes often have disruptive, large area abilities and are often the hero to initiate teamfights. Bruisers and tanks from the off-lane are typically the first in and the last out of a fight.
Great off-laners for beginners include Grux and Steel.
Jungler

Finally, we have the Jungler position, which is often considered the most difficult to play. Junglers are heroes that excel at rotating through and clearing the jungle camps tucked between the lanes quickly and efficiently. They are responsible for securing objectives such as the jungle minions and key monsters such as Fangtooth and Orb Prime, and also for ganking (surprise attacking) enemies in other lanes to help their team gain gold and level advantages. Overall map awareness, and understanding what each other member of the team is doing in the early laning phase, are crucial for junglers.
Great junglers for beginners include Khaimera and Rampage.
Each lane role in Predecessor is important in its own way, and understanding the responsibilities of each role is crucial for success in the game. When a team is able to effectively utilize all different roles, they are much more likely to come out on top in a match. Whether you're a new player just starting out or a seasoned veteran, understanding the different roles in Predecessor is a must for anyone looking to take their gameplay to the next level.
